USA Grand Prix, BMW Sauber F1 Team: Driver Line-up

After Robert Kubica did not get the green light from the FIA Medical Delegate and the race's Director of Medical Services to compete in the 2007 U.S. Grand Prix, the team has nominated Sebastian Vettel to drive the second BMW Sauber F1.07 (car number 10) alongside Nick Heidfeld.

For Sebastian Vettel this will be his Formula One race debut. "Of course, I am looking forward to my first F1 race", the 19-year old German said, "but I wish it had come under different circumstances. It's never nice if a team mate can't drive because he had an accident. For me the Indianapolis Speedway is unknown territory, but I have prepared myself for this situation and tomorrow I have two 90 minute practice sessions. I know the car very well as I have quite a lot of testing miles under my belt."

Honda Gets It Right

Roger Ehrenberg submits: One of the things that really irritates me about the U.S. public markets - and the mind-set of many U.S.-based institutional investors - is an emphasis on short-term results. There are inherent, structural, perverse incentives for corporate executives to do things that maximize short-term results to the detriment of long-term shareholder value. And this is a shame, for investors, executives and the economy alike.

Every so often I read a story that flies in the face of this approach, providing an example of a company or companies that eschew short-term thinking and instead choose to take the long view. And I know, I KNOW, this is the right thing to do. I just read one of these stories, and surprise, surprise, the company mentioned is not a U.S.-based enterprise - Honda Motor Company (HMC).

On this occasion though Jan Magnussen took the chequered flag in front of Casper Elgaard, with rising star Michael Outzen rounding out the podium.

Casper Elgaard had qualified for pole position in the final, but he was being followed closely by Jan Magnussen, who was far more competitive than previously this year.

Social Networking sites: A significant threat to online security ...

Webroot has announced the results of a survey conducted by Webroot of 3,000 UK home computer users reviewing their understanding of external threats and attacks to their PCs.

The survey reveals that young people are putting their parents at risk of online fraud and identity theft through their social networking activities, including signing up for new accounts, engaging in IM chat, downloading files, and other activities where personal data can be exposed through spyware. Up to 82 percent of teens and young adults surveyed said that they visit social networking sites on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and 99 percent browse the Internet. More than any other age demographic, 92 percent of this age group will put themselves at risk of spyware infection by opening attachments and embedded links in instant messages, clicking on pop-up advertisements, and downloading games, music and screensavers.

Hollywood gives blessing to BitTorrent store

BitTorrent is using its software to launch a download site - called the BitTorrent Entertainment Network - that will distribute more than 5,000 titles from digital movies, TV shows, games and other media.

In the battle for the nascent online video market, BitTorrent could be a competitor, thanks to its existing reputation for speedy file distribution.

It also has an established user base it says numbers 135 million - which could immediately pit it against some of the sector's heavyweights, including Brightcove, Joost (a new P2P service started by the founders of Kazaa and Skype) and YouTube. Joost recently partnered with some big entertainment companies, such as Viacom.

Despite the reputation of BitTorrent's software for helping people illegally share millions of unauthorised video files, company managers have convinced studios such as 20th Century Fox, Lions Gate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios that the company comes to Hollywood with a laurel branch in its hands.

The students will be performing favorites such as "That Old Black Magic" and "Lullaby at Bird Land." Christine Eubinks will be a featured soloist in the choir.

After their performance, the students and audience will have the pleasure of seeing a college-level jazz group perform. The group operates under the direction of Sebastian Bonaiuto, who has led some of Boston College's most esteemed music groups, including the marching band, which was featured in the 1995 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

What makes BC bOp! stand out is their unique arrangement of ensemble musicians and jazz vocalists who perform side by side during the show.

$100M Equity Play Eyes Tail-End Buys, Bail-Outs

DALLAS-In aligning as joint venture partners, Behringer Harvard and PGGM have built in flexibility to their agreement for the rapid deployment of $100 million in equity. The multifamily investment scope runs the full development gamut, including bail-out deals.

Behringer Harvard's been heavily investing this year in class A multifamily and new student housing, but it's uncertain if any acquisitions to date will be rolled to the JV, Jason Mattox, the Dallas-based investment group's executive vice president, tells GlobeSt.com. It's also open-ended as to which of the several Behringer funds will end up with the JV's deeds. There might even be more than one, he explains. "The PGGM agreement provides for a great deal of flexibility in the way that the money is invested," he says. Unless the strategy is altered, leveraged plays are destined to reel in about $400 million of real estate.

Realtors' Commission Fees Are Under Assault

(CBS News) Even with today's housing slump, real estate agents will pull in about $60 billion this year. And the reason is, as any homeowner knows, they charge a six percent commission on the price of every house they sell. So, for instance, a home that goes for a half a million dollars will net agents $30,000 right off the top. For realtors, the six percent commission is sacrosanct. It's remained in place, even as the price of homes has quadrupled over the past 25 years. But as correspondent Lesley Stahl reports, things are beginning to change. What happened to travel agents, stock brokers and book sellers the encroachment of the Internet is beginning to affect real estate agents. And the sacred six percent is under assault from online discounters. Lehrer Willis and his fiance Bridgette Takeuchi of Seattle, young and Internet savvy, took a big chance when they decided not to hire a traditional real estate agent.

A week of tight liquidity beckons

MUMBAI: Advance tax outflows and a fresh market stabilisation schedule promise a check on banking system liquidity next week.

Overnight call money rates nearly doubled to 10.35% on Friday from 5.38% on Thursday as banks were clearly caught napping on reporting fortnight.

Fridays spike was the second-biggest seen in calendar 2007, after the 10.5% levels touched on January 2. Call rates are expected to stay high in the next few sessions.

Advance tax payments will flow out of the banking system into government coffers starting next week. The breather on liquidity depends a lot on how fast the government will spend this. Analysts said with the financial year-end looming, government departments may spend faster to exhaust budgets, accelerating the flowback of funds.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones) -- Turkey's stocks and currency fell sharply Monday, as the country's political crisis deepened after the military threatened to intervene in the presidential elections to protect secular values, and the Islamist government came under pressure to call early general elections. Istanbul's benchmark IMKB-100 index closed down 4%, making it the worst performer among major stock market indices around the world Monday. The index earlier tested declines of over 6%. Turkey's currency, the lira, also tumbled. It was trading down 2.3% at 1.3590 against the dollar and down 2.5% at 1.8511 against the euro. Shares of Turkey's only U.S.-listed company, telecommunications provider Turkcell Iletsim Hizmetleri (TKC) , fell 4.7% to $14.14. Copper and zinc steady as US data, Peru support

LONDON (Reuters) - Copper hovered around $8,000 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange, keeping an eye on a miners' strike in Peru, while zinc found support in a potential supply disruption, analysts said on Wednesday.

By 1037 GMT copper for delivery in three months fell back from an earlier intra-day high of $8,030 and was indicated at $7,980/7,995. On Tuesday, copper closed at $7,986 after rallying 2.9 percent on supportive U.S. economic data.

Trade was seen subdued throughout the rest of the week with Shanghai closed until next Tuesday and Tokyo shut until Monday.

The market was supported by Tuesday's U.S. data, showing manufacturing expanded last month at its fastest pace in almost a year and a threat to supply from Peru, the world's third-largest producer of copper and zinc, where a nationwide mineworkers strike is in its third day.

German Stocks Climb; TUI and Deutsche Postbank Pace the Gains

Mutual Funds Riskier Than Stocks?

A while back on our Mutual Funds discussion board, Fool Community member Josephus2 made the provocative suggestion that mutual funds are "riskier than stocks." I think his post offers a terrific opportunity to explore some interesting issues regarding mutual funds.

The post Here's how he explained his position:

1. Stops are not available on mutual funds:

As millions of investors realized when the internet bubble popped, mutual funds can lose you money just as quickly as individual stocks. Without stop-losses in place, you are risking unlimited losses. (Or at least down to zero)

2. Options are not available on mutual funds:

Buying protective Puts can insure a stock investment against loss. This strategy is especially valuable during earnings season when good stocks are destroyed by the market for no good reason.

May 08, 2007 | Eclipsys will restate earnings following completion of a voluntary review of the company's stock option grant practices and related accounting issues. The review covered stock option grants made from the company's IPO in August 1998 until the present, with particular focus upon grants made before implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in July 2002. Eclipsys identified stock option grants made that had exercise prices lower than the fair market value, and concluded approximately $8.5 million in additional aggregate non-cash stock-based compensation expense should have been recognized from 1999-2006. This results in approximately $500,000 in related incremental payroll withholding taxes over the same period. 鈥淭he Company is working diligently to prepare its Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2006, which will affect the restatements as described above." Eclipsys incurred approximately $1.0 million in costs associated with the stock option review during the first quarter of 2007, and expects to incur approximately $1.5 million to $2.0 million in the second quarter of 2007.

Museum to showcase 22 automobiles as art

Streamlining was the slickest trend of the 1930s, with everything from telephones to toasters designed to evoke aerodynamic speed. For automobiles, the result was some of the most beautiful sculptural forms ever put on four wheels. Some of the great designers in Europe and America produced vehicles crafted to not only cheat the wind but to appear graceful and elegant. Twenty-two of history's most significant streamlined automobiles will be assembled Sunday at the Phoenix Art Museum for a two-month exhibit that celebrates the artistry of aerodynamics. .

Health care reforms should be based on reality

Part of virtually every discussion concerning the state of health care in the United States is a reference to the uninsured. Given that, we assume that the group of uninsured must be a very important part of the problem. We need to better understand just what is meant by the ubiquitous "uninsured." We'll likely all agree that it is a very serious part of the problem confronting us as a nation. We hear of the ever-increasing number of uninsured. The former top number for the United States was 46 million…until it became 47 million. That seemed to occur overnight. I don't know who is responsible for keeping track of that number, but they sure seem on top of their game! Let's take a look at what comprises the "uninsured." First, this is not a static group of people. Instead, the number of "uninsured" is an estimate…a snapshot…of the number of folks thought to be without health insurance on any given day of the year.

New priest compensation plan to take effect July 1

BRIGHTON -- The Archdiocese of Boston will increase priest stipends on July 1 in an effort to compensate for higher living expenses and defray the cost of Social Security. The goal of the new policy is to be fair and just for all priests, according to Father Robert Connors, chair of the Stipend Committee.

The benefits package for archdiocesan priests was recently approved by Cardinal Sen P. OMalley after two consultations with the Presbyteral Council. The policy is usually reviewed about every three years but has not been changed since 2003, except for annual cost of living increases of 3 percent.

Father Arthur M. Coyle, secretary for pastoral and ministerial services, laid out the two primary reasons for the increase in a letter to the priests of the archdiocese.

Mock tournament if NBA players aligned by shoe company

By John Marshall
The Associated Press
Youve seen the best players from each conference face off in the All-Star Game. What if you could pit teams from the four major shoe companies against each other?
Chances are, its never going to happen; but that wont stop us from imagining it. Using athletes from the top four basketball shoe manufacturers, asap has created a mock tournament to see which sneaker company would reign on the floor.
We broke them into two divisions Old School and New School and are running the tournament as if all players are healthy.
Heres what I came up with:

n OLD SCHOOL FINALS: ADIDAS VS. CONVERSE.
ADIDAS: G Gilbert Arenas, G Tracy McGrady, F Tim Duncan, F Kevin Garnett, C Dwight Howard. (Reserves: Chauncey Billups, Adam Morrison, Andres Nocioni, Peja Stojakovic, Grant Hill, Mike Miller, Jordan Farmar.)
CONVERSE: G Dwyane Wade, G Kirk Hinrich, F Udonis Haslem, F Kyle Korver, C Mike Sweetney.

Puma profit falls on cost of developing new products

DÜSSELDORF: Puma, the second- largest maker of sporting goods in Europe, said Monday that fourth- quarter profit declined 26 percent as the company spent more money to design new shoes and clothes.

Net income fell to €32.8 million, or $43 million, from €44.1 million a year earlier, the company said.

That missed the €34.5 million median estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Revenue rose 38 percent to €480.6 million, also short of the median estimate of €492 million.

Costs increased by almost half in the period and profitability waned as Puma raised investment in its brand. The company plans to introduce goods in 2007, like a range inspired by tennis players of the 1970s, to compete with larger rivals Adidas and Nike in a year without high-profile sporting events like the soccer World Cup.

A New Twist on an Old Crime

A gang of professional car thieves trolls the parking lot of an upscale retail mall until they find what they want: a shiny new SUV. Within seconds they've disabled the alarm, hot-wired the engine, and driven away.

Now, how to sell the car for big bucks? They COULD do the traditional...and sell it for parts or as hot merchandise. But that would only bring in a few thousand dollars. Instead, they turn to the most lucrative scam on the block that will help fetch top dollar for their prize.

It's called "car cloning." And, as part of our longstanding battle to curb auto theft (we've been in the business since the days of the Model T), we're determined to stop it.

Here's how cloning works:

After leaving the mall, the thieves head for a neighboring state.

Citizens can voice opinions to assist northern businesses

The Ontario government's Northern Development Councils have announced they will tap into regional expertise to help develop recommendations for high-potential business growth strategies, says Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci. "We're on the side of northerners," said Bartolucci, in a news release. "That's why we're initiating a dialogue with northerners about growing and strengthening northern businesses." The research phase began late last year with a review of research and previous reports, said Bartolucci. The councils used this information to develop potential growth strategies. Northerners now have an opportunity to comment on a wide variety of proposed business-support strategies and to identify those they think would be of greater benefit for their own communities, he said.

Jones introduces new warranty for used cars

This covers the failure of the vehicle's engine, transmission, and drive train. This warranty is for the life of the vehicle as long as it was purchased at Jones with less than 100,000 miles. Most importantly the warranty is completely free.“We wanted to do something different and something that would both bring Valley people into Wickenburg and also cause Wickenburg people to shop locally," said Jones Ford-Mercury Chrysler Jeep General Manager Brian Jones. “This is catastrophic protection. It protects the buyer for the life of the vehicle as long as we do the factory recommended service and preventative maintenance."

Innovation in Game Development Not Just Limited to Programmers and ...

San Francisco, CA (OPENPRESS) March 8, 2007 -- At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, professionals from the video game industry are learning and sharing the newest techniques for creating and marketing successful PC, console and mobile games. For developers of casual games that are commonly downloaded and played on a PC, many are exploring creative new distribution models, shifting away from relying on some of the old ways that have been used to market games online. The casual games business has grown rapidly over the past few years, built on the foundation of the try-before-you-buy model, followed by RealArcades software client model, or the popular subscription-based model of Big Fish Games, Shockwave and RealArcades GamePass. The true catalyst for growth of this industry has been the try-before-you-buy model that made it easy and risk-free to sample games before you were required to enter your credit card information.

Bill Proposes Doubling Automobile Sales Tax

North Carolina consumers would have to pay more than double the current tax on the purchase of a new car or truck under a tax increase proposal introduced to the state senate last week.

Senate Bill 1201, introduced by state Sen. Dan Clodfelter (D-Charlotte), would raise the Highway Use Tax on a new vehicle from the current 3 percent to 6.75 percent.

If passed, the tax would raise an estimated $900 million annually for the state's Highway Trust Fund.

Not surprisingly, the bill already has a growing list of opponents. The bill's one known supporter, Sen. Clodfelter, could not be reached for comment.

"To ask North Carolinians to pay an additional $900 million in taxes each year would add approximately $20 to each consumer's monthly car payment," North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association President Robert Glaser said.

OK, well, not absolutely "all." (Women, for example, it taught me nothing about. Or how to change a tire.) But it was as essential a text as anything penned by Marshall McLuhan in understanding media and the mediated world, and it was much easier for a 10-year-old to work out.

Plenty of it went right over my head, of course, but that's part of what made it attractive and valuable: Things that go over your head can make you raise your head a little higher.

The magazine instilled in me a habit of mind, a way of thinking about a world rife with false fronts, small print, deceptive ads, booby traps, treacherous language, double standards, half truths, subliminal pitches and product placements; it warned me that I was often merely the target of people who claimed to be my friend.

What's on Now

Ernie Els, the No. 6 player in golf's world rankings, has agreed to a multi-year equipment endorsement deal with Callaway Golf just days after leaving a four-year relationship with Titleist. Callaway announced the deal as Els began first round play in the Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand with a Callaway FT-5 driver, an HX Tour 56 golf ball and a new Callaway bag. Callaway and Els will work on fitting him with the metalwoods, irons, wedges and putter that best suit his game. The driver has 8.5 degrees of loft and aneutral face bias, and Els got comfortable with it in just two days of trial, said a company official. The eventual switch to an Odyssey putter (Odyssey is a Callaway business unit) is definite, said the Callaway official. As for irons and wedges, Els will work with legendary Callaway club designer Roger Cleveland, who has known Els for more than 17 years. Els will continue to wear the hat with SAP logo on front, but the Callaway logo appears on the sides and back of his cap. Although it was reported in some quarters that Callaway bought out Els agreement with Titleist, Callaway officials said that's not true. The parties didn't disclose specific terms of the deal.

State mulls cell-phone driving ban

When individuals are taken to the hospital after car crashes, they seldom tell doctors they wrecked because they were talking on a cell phone. But Dr. Daniel Wehner says it happens – a lot.Wehner is chairman of emergency medicine at Memorial Medical Center. He said most accidents that send injured people to the emergency room could have been prevented had at least one of the drivers in a two-car accident been more careful and attentive."I would be willing to bet that a significant number of people who we see in accidents were distracted by using a cell phone but are unwilling to admit it for obvious reasons," he said. "No one wants to admit guilt."Mari Lynne Patrick of Nanty Glo said she never used her cell phone while driving until she got a hands-free setup. She said if she gets a call, she can answer it while keeping both hands on the steering wheel."With a hands-free phone, it's OK because I have control of my vehicle," she said.

Attorney General files suit against insurance companies

The four companies listed in the suit, American Heritage Life Insurance Company, Protective Life Insurance Company, Old United Life Insurance Company and Resource Life Insurance Company, have been accused of defrauding customers who purchased "credit insurance." The insurance was supposed to cover the purchaser for the duration of that person's auto loans. If the insured incurred disability or died during the loan period, the insurance would pay off the balance of the auto loan. The companies listed promised to return the unearned premiums if the consumer paid off their car loan early as required by the Texas Insurance Code.

The lawsuit seeks to refund money to approximately 27,000 Texas residents who purchased the insurance. If approved, the consumers affected would get back an average of $222 plus interest.
